Located inside an intimate, speak-easy style comedy room in the basement of historic Renaissance Vineyard Church in Ferndale, Michigan, the Joke Gym is where comics from Detroit and all over the world come to work out new material, projects, and concepts.

“who we are” statement

The Joke Gym exists to ‘Deepen Craft and Community’. We value going deep into the craft of comedy. The Joke Gym is an excellent room to try new material, test new stories, and experiment with different concepts. Our vision is that all comics coming to the stage at Joke Gym, whether brand new or seasoned veteran, will improve in their craft. We hope that they will feel the freedom to stretch themselves artistically and take risks onstage at the Joke Gym that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to do on other commercial shows.

We also exist to promote community and relationships amongst the resident comics, regulars at the club, and performers occasionally visiting from out of town. When you come to the Joke Gym you are invited to join our comedy family. This is a non-competitive environment and we strive to create authentic relationships among comics, not transactional relationships.
