Cross Talk
Today is Good Friday.
In honor of this religiously significant weekend the kids were given large bags filled with candy and cheap plastic goods made overseas, some of it undoubtedly by the hands of exploited labor.
To commemorate the day of Jesus’ death, Laurie and I made a crucifix from scrap drywall, old deck screws, and the cheap junk that has come to signify Easter. This piece invites us to contemplate the depths of our collective depravity, the strength of our delusions and denial, and the blasphemous twisting of Easter.
Do we prioritize the things Jesus died for: justice, mercy, remembrance of the poor, and self-sacrificial love?
Or is Easter just an excuse to wear bright pastels?
Laurie wrote the following as an explanation for this piece:
Slave labor
Overflowing landfills
Clogged arteries
Do this in remembrance of me…
As you look at this piece I invite you to think about and answer the following two questions:
Who died?
What is the most offensive aspect of this piece?
